Traditional gas lamps on Charles Bridge for Advent
The advent period in Prague is celebrated in many ways. One of the people who makes Christmas in the Czech capital special is a lamplighter, who lights the gas lamps on the Charles Bridge.
Charles Bridge is the only bridge in the world illuminated by gas lights. They were installed in 2010. Until the 23rd of December, a lamplighter in a traditional suit and with a long stick leaves from Křižovnický Square daily to light the lamps on Charles Bridge. He goes down one side of the bridge and comes back on the other side. The gas lamps on Charles Bridge are lit at the same time that the main public lighting switches on, between 4:05 and 4:15 pm, depending on how short the day is.
