Exhibition of two centuries of portraiture in the Czech Republic
The exhibition at Prague Castle's Imperial Stables ('Císařská konírna') displays portraits by Czech artists starting with Josef Mánes, who was born 200 years ago this year. The exhibition, which was organised in cooperation with the Office of The President of the Republic, Prague Castle Administration and the Manes Association of Fine Artists, will run until the 22nd of March 2020.
The work of Mánes’ ideological followers is also part of the exhibition. These are: Mikoláš Aleš, Josef Brožík, and the group of artists who are now known as the National Theatre generation – František Ženíšek, Vojtěch Hynais and others.
In the early 20th century, Czech portrait artists, such as František Kupka, Joža Uprka, Jan Preisler and Miloš Jiránek, were highly influenced by French artists. Czech modernists such as Emil Filla, Antonín Procházka, Bohumil Kubišta, Jan Zrzavý, Otakar Kubín, Václav Špála, Alfréd Justiz and others were also influenced by French modernism.
The unique works of Max Švabinský and Ludvík Kuba are also on display.
Jindřich Štyrský, Toyen, Josef Šíma, Alois Wachsman, and Adolf Hoffmeister represent the surrealist period.
Painters from the Second World War, including Arnošt Paderlík, František Jiroudek, Josef Liesler, Karel Souček, Kamil Lhoták and other representatives of the 40s-60s, are also included in the exhibition.
The exhibition also includes several works of contemporary portrait artists.
